Lightroom or Capture One?

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

Which Software?

At our university we are lucky enough to have the Phase One camera equipment. The use and understanding of this type of kit/software will be crucial to my development outside of university as many employers use the Capture one software for their company/practice. There is a significant amount of difference in using Lightroom and Capture One, when tethering and editing a shoot and with the amount of control that you have over colour control. This is an important aspect to consider when choosing which software, you use when editing, as colour balance and tonality can be the difference in how your work presents itself. Alongside this, Capture One also holds more saturation and contrast in the files, making them a larger format of RAW, but essentially giving you more control over all colours throughout.

When using Lightroom, there are options to tether a shoot while in a studio, like Capture One. Lightroom also has capabilities of editing colour saturation and all the usual exposure tricks and white balance settings. When using Lightroom, there are easier places to find all the settings you may need to change, this is one of the concepts of Lightroom which is easier to navigate than Capture One. Furthermore, when making changes to a single image on Lightroom, it will not then continue to use those settings for next images you take, whereas Capture One will do this.

Overall, there are different pros and cons to each software, it is just choosing which one is right for you and your skill set and which you prefer professionally.
