University of Salford - Socially Engaged Photography
There was a few aspects of the open day that really captured my attention. There were booklets that were given at the start of the day, these helped us navigate around the university easily. The booklets also contained information about the other aspect such as funding, accommodation and travel towards the uni.
The course that I was particularly interested in was ‘Socially engaged photography’. While there was a welcome talk to explain university life as a postgraduate, the session explaining the course, was slightly disorganised. There were multiple different people also confused by the process to see somebody who could inform us about the course and how it was taught.
After briefly looking up online what the course was about, after speaking to somebody who works on the course, explained it differently to how it had been written online. When engaging in conversation with the course leader, she explained how that the course looked at more engagement of the social practice rather than photography on the course. My initial understanding of the course was that there was going to be ideas of social practice behind the photography, rather than working out in a community with people such as service users. While this line of work would have been great to expand on, but it was not the type of course that I was looking for, to help expand my own practice based on photography.
