Paper Negative Workshop

Once again, we were luckily joined by Rachel Louise Brown, for a workshop (this time in person!) based on using large format film cameras. In this workshop she spoke through what equipment what she used in the past and how she was making a change to more economical paper types, which meant change in camera also. This meant that Rachel, was still in the processes of learning a new technique, which was nice to see such an established photographer still learning.

Her session started with how photography came to be such a hugely practiced medium that it is today and the histories behind camera obscuras and how they were developed. This then naturally lead into the workshop, where she showed us what we would be using also how to properly take care of light sensitive paper. Rachel also mentioned about how much constant light there would need to be for the paper to expose properly. Additionally, she mentioned how we would have to control the shutter speed manually after taking a correct light measurement, to see how long we needed to expose the image for. (this part was slightly nerve racking) The session was quite relaxed and enjoyable, Rachel made her way around all the different groups to make sure we were managing with the cameras, she also provided us with different props to make the images a little more interesting!

Taking away from the session, I found myself asking more questions about large format mediums and how it could be something new and challenging in the future to peruse.

Images seen were taken in the workshop!
