Testing Print Sizing

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

What size for exhibitions and books?

When looking into different prints and their different functions, I found that printing was such an important part of my photographic practice. Understanding my work more, has come from physically printing and not just looking at images on a screen. Having the prints to hold materially and place onto a wall, changes the meaning and personality of the imagery. This then consists with the sizing of the images too, after multiple workshops within the course, understanding why printing off images in a certain size is important to communicate your story of your images.

When first printing my dummy book the sizing of that was a5, as it felt more inmate to hold and digest that way. But having conversations with tutors and other peers, it has felt necessary to take the book bigger, such as a4 or a3, just to see what different kind of effect it will have on a viewer, compared to smaller prints. Furthermore, understanding why the book could be bigger, focuses on different surrounding factors of what the content of the work is, rather than why it has been made. (from a personal point of the photographer) Additionally, when printing for my exhibition, it was clear that i was going to have a set of different sizes, to communicate different presences within the images.
